My method of working with clients, or therapeutic approach, focuses initially of developing rapport, establishing an empathic base, and promoting a sense of safety in the therapy room. I engage with people using interpersonal process therapy, including psychodynamic and cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness, humanistic approaches, and attachment theory. I am flexible with my approach of addressing substance use issues, utilizing the continuum of harm reduction (including abstinence) and motivational enhancement therapy. I view myself as a “mutt” regarding therapy, continually adding to my knowledge base and incorporating various styles and theories that fit my personality and world view. I focus on person-in-environment and multicultural frameworks when looking at the lives of my clients. I find humor can be helpful, as appropriate, and want our time together to be both productive and meaningful.
I specialize in the treatment of substance use issues and addictions. I also work with individuals who have experienced complex trauma. I work with all age ranges of adults, but have expertise working with emerging adults (18-25 years old) and adolescents (14-17 years old). I address multiple mental health issues in my therapeutic work. Along with the aforementioned specialties, I engage with those struggling with depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, identity development, searching for meaning, personality and self-risk issues.
I have been working in the field of mental health and substance use counseling for the past 15 years, including my graduate training. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Colorado. I am also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor in the state of Illinois currently, holding those credentials since 2007 and 2005 respectively.
I have worked in a university setting for 10 years, coordinating the alcohol and other drug programs in collaboration with other university entities. I also helped develop and administer a counselor in residence program which embedded mental health services into the university housing environment. I further enjoyed training practicum students and interns.
Previously, I worked in an outpatient adolescent substance abuse facility focusing on prevention, early intervention, and treatment. I was the coordinator for the adolescent program at the time of my transition to the university.
